Lucky T`

The book is getting better.
Carrie just found out that her mom sent her t shirt to india on accident!
she is terrified! and very angry, i would be too. this shirt actually seems like it as lucky for her. lol..
Dear Carrie,
I know you feel mad about your t-shirt being sent to India, i would be too. im a very supersticious person myself. and i understand why you would be so mad about it. sorry your best friend thinks your crazy, my friends would think i was too if i told them my "lucky" t-shirt as gone forever. lol
good luck!

Lucky T

Today during reading time in class i started the book Lucky T by Kate Brian.
its a good book so far, i hope i enjoy reading it cause i never find books i enjoy reading. besides magazines.. well anyway. Carrie has this luky T shirt, she assumes its lucky, her dad told her it was and she believes it is. her friend piper, thinks she is crazy, i agree with carrie though. why not think its lucky?? its always fun having fantasy's and using your imagination. especially when your a kid, but when your older most people think its silly, but it reminds you of being a kid :)
this seems like something i would do, i would actually think the shirt is lucky, especially if things happened to me, like what happened to her.

lucky T

For my outside reading book i chose to read lucky T by kate brian, its about a girl who has this lucky t-shirt and her mom accidently donates it to help people in India, so carrie (the main character) goes there to try and find it.
i chose this book cause a friend told me it was good, and it kinda reminded me of the sisterhood of the traveling pants when they go to greece and try to find the jeans.

Love

Alford, Henry. "how i learned to love goat meat" March 31 2009. April 1 2009 http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/dining/01goat.html?scp=1&sq=love&st=cse

This now loves goat. eating it any way. I would never eat goat.. they don't seem like a meat food that would be good like chicken and turkey.. or hamburger. goats seem more like a milk animal. i think it sounds gross to eat a goat. unlike me, this guy loves eating goat..he really likes goat now. he always wants to order it at as many restaurants as possible. he starting becoming "go go goat" and i agree, he is go go goat. he has had all kinds of goat.. spicy goat.. he has even had indian goat.. he loves goat.. thats all he orders.. if they have it.. and he buys it to make at his house even! i would think he would get some... problems with his body from eating so much goat.. this guy now loves goat........

(this blog is horrible)

War

Santora, Marc. "In a desolate Iraqi village, war is far from over" March 31 2009. March 31 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/01/world/middleeast/01diyala.html?_r=1&ref=world

There was an explosion, and iraqi had pressure triggered a roadside bomb..his legs were ripped off and he died... American and Iraqi soldiers are still invading and destroying homes. THe war is still just as violent there as is was two years ago. some of the soldiers in iraq say they are not doing what they should be doing as to what the other soldiers are doing.. this will cause the war to last longer or cause america to loose. "these guys are going to fight, and they are going to die"
this was a quote said by colonol Rago. I think this war is stupid. and it should just be over and done with. (who doesnt think that?) war is stupid and all countries should unite! haha... people need to be more condiserate of others and not just themselves, even if its for the whole country. there are other country's out there also doing the same thing. i dont like politics and all this stuff. so i dont even know what this war is about. but it should just stop..

Colonization

Tierny, John. "A survival imperative for space colonization" July 17 2007. March 27 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/17/science/17tier.html

The scientist from this article Dr. Gott predicted in 1993 that humanity would last atleast another 5100 years. and now he says that to ensure our long-term survival we need to get a colony started on mars within the next 46 years. this article talks about scientific stuff and previous predictions made by other scientist's. and why they agree or disagree with their arguments about humanity's life span.
I personally dont know much about science and our earth. but i do not believe that starting a new colony on mars will do anything for us..

#11 Global issue

Booker, Salih. "Genocide in Darfur" June 24 2004. March 19 2009. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040712/booker

Genocide in Darfur is a big global issue. TONS of people are killed, and put through pain and suffering in Sudan. the government in sudan isnt very good, they arent doing anything major to try and stop the horrible things going on there. and they may keep continuing if no one trys to fight against it, in a major way. the government and people who are againt alot of ethinicities and racial people... that has caused alot of what has been going on in Darfur...

#10 Holidays

Ramano, Jay. "Big threats to little fingers" December 11 2008. March 19 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/11/garden/11fix.html

This article talks about during the holidays parents really need to think about child safety. alot of people go all out with decorations and it creates a new atmosphere for children, something that there not use to seeing in their own home. the author is just giving some advice to parents and family members of children so that their holidays can be spent happily and safe with out any accidents. about 2,400 children are brought the to emergency room each year for accidnets sustained after inserting electrical receptacles, and more than 70% of them are supervised my parents or other adults. and there are some preventions for these types of injuries for a little price of $2!!!!!!!!!!
i also think that parents need to take more precautions during the holidays, some decorations can lead to horrible injuries or even death. according to this article, and common sense....

#9 Bollywood

Zalubowski, David. "Excersing-Bollywood style" Feburary 19 2009. March 19 2009. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/19/exercising-bollywood-style/

This article talks about the dancing in bollywood films, and how it attracts americans as a good excercise techinique. like Salsa and Belly dancing. lots of americans have found this very interesting. and thought it would be fun to try since alot of people are looking for new ways to get fit. it also gets them more involved with the culture. and people even got good results from this! i think that its interesting that this would interest so many people to do as a workout. i too would be interested in trying this out. it seems fun and who doesnt like trying new things?!

#7 Change

safety.blr.com "California passes cell phone law" september 28 2006. March 19 2009 http://safety.blr.com/news.aspx?id=101975

(this is a really stupid change topic, but i couldnt find anything else)
well basically califronia passed a new law that prohibits the use of cell phones while driving. this was in effect july, 1, 2008. the first fine for breaking this law is a $20 ticket, and each one after that is $50. but.... the driver is allowed to use mobile devices while driving only in the case of an emergency.
Drivinglaws.org "The Minnesota Cell Phone Law & Text Messaging Ban" July 31 2008 (?) March 19 2009
http://www.drivinglaws.org/minn.php
Minnesota also passed this law, and it became effective August 1, 2008. in MN the violation of this law can cost up to $300 rather than $20 or $50.
this article says that 25% of all crashes are caused by drivers being disctracted because of using a mobile device while behind the wheel.

I think that it was a good idea for this law to be passed, because it is a big cause of car accidents every day. i just dont think that MN needs to charge so much for violating this law. even though it probably will encourage more people not to use their cell phones while driving..

#6 Hope

Grady, Denise, "After a devistating birth injury, Hope". Feburary 23 2009. March 19 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/24/health/24hospital.html

In Tanzania, two teenage girls are suffering very much, and themselves, and people all around them are having hope for them to get better. They both were pregnant and were in labor around the same time, both in labor for days. only to end up with a dead child. since the labor was so long, it inflicted a dreadful injury on the mothers. an internal wound called fistula. this is when there is an prolonged labor occurs. mostly when the child is to big to go through the"birth canal" when the baby dies, and most of the time so does the mother or they will produce a fistula. they both had 2 painful operations by 2 different doctors and both failed. they recently had another operation done, and they are hoping the best for it

#5 RELIGION/belief/non-belief

Rabin, Roni. Religious belief influences end-of-life treatment choices. March 17 2009. March 17 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/18/health/18faith.html?_r=1

i read an article from NY times. about religion.. this one is called "Religious belief influences end-of-life treatment choices" basically this article is saying that less religious people are more dependent on the doctors to keep them alive rather than god. (obvioulsy) and that the non-religious patients want the doctors to do everything possible to keep them alive. also studies show that religious people are less likely to sign something about their will, because they say live is sacred and that its their "duty and obligation to stay alive as long as possible."
I have a different opinion about things they talk about in this article. i think that no matter your religion or if your even religious or not, that you should have done what ever you need to so that you can stay alive as long as possible. unless you will be suffering the rest of your life. unless you choose to. also i think that no matter what the doctors should just do their job in helping the patients. because this article also says that it is more likely for a religious person to be put on a mechanical ventilator to maintain breathing during the last week of life, and i think that even if you arent that religious this should still be done for every patient that needs it.

#4 Gender roles

Sklar, Benjamin. Gender roles, marriage, and anger. June 10 2008, March 15 2009. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/10/gender-roles-marriage-and-anger/

In this article that i read from NY times. talks about gender roles.. obviously... well.. it talks about same sex relationships homes, and opposite sex relationship homes. it says that same sex couple homes usually split the household work evenly, but in a heterosex couple most of the househould work it for the women.. (like "back in the day") and when a heterosex couple live together but are not married the relationship is more egalitarian, like a married couple. apparently most women who's partner is a man, often feel angery about the amount of household work they have to do.. along with most of the "relationship work"
i agree with this, i think women have the right to get angry, sure men feel as if they need to be the support of the family, but that doesnt mean that they cant help out with household work also. and i also think that is more likely for a same-sex relationship to have equal work, becaue technically neither is the man or women.. so they cant go by that "rule"

#3 culture different from my own

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9C07E0D9143AF934A25753C1A9629C8B63

this article from newyork times, talks about Indian women wearing their traditional dresses as an "act to honor the past" The author of this article doesnt think that they need to wear these traditional dresses because being in their culture shouldnt be a cultural duty to have to wear them. He also thinks that wearing these dresses puts them in danger. i thikn that he thinks this becuase in America people are very critical and might think that some one is a terrorist or some one who isdangerous and harmful to the US if they are wearing clothing of their culture while in the US. HE is also worried about different cultures dying. i agree with this, since so many cultures are mixing together, especially in the US, soon some cultures will be gone, maybe not 100% but none of them will ever be the same.

facing a difficulty: food chain in the midwest

Midwest facing coice between crops and water

The middle east and places in north Africa have been forced to choose between being able to grow more crops, or preserve their supply of water. Their population has already increased rapidly within the years and is predicted to reach  nearly 600 million by the year 2050. And this isnt a good thing, because each persons amount of food is already scarce, and by the year 2050 it will be about half of what they get now. I think that this is a very hard choice to make, because water is a must, and so is food. i think that either way they go it will lead to disaster.

Naturaly Disaster: Heat waves

Most deadly of the natural disasters: the heat wave

Did you know that heat waves in the united states kill more people than all other natural disasters combined?!? thats amazing! but sad... about 1500 people die each year in the US from heat waves, and less than 200/year from tornadoes, earthquakes and floods. the most deadly heat wave in recent years (in the US) was in Chicago, in July 1995. This heat wave lasted about a week and killed 739 people! People who are most at risk to die from a heat wave are "the poor, the old, residents of abandoned and violent neighborhoods who lived alone, lacked access to transportation and lacked air conditioning" (quote Dr.Klinenberg) Also it is predicted that by 2050 that heat deaths could increase from 1,500-3,900.  Dr. Klinenberg see's this as a big problem, mostly because there is already a high death rate in alot of cities that dont even have high enough temperatures for a heat wave. also that most people dont take heat waves seriously, and they should start to. he says that if this many people died from a huricane then people would remember it, and if you ask some one about an old and very dangerous heat wave that they wouldnt even remember it.
I agree with his opinion. I never thought about heat waves before, and i never knew how deadly they were.

outside reading 17 (because a few of mine werent long enough)

i read another article at fox9.com
a 16 year old boy from mankato died from drinking. he was at a park late friday night with his 2 older brothers and some friends, who were all under aged. between the ages 16 and 19.
after they called the police around 11:30 PM becuase he had passed out they later said he want breathing any more and was pronounced dead. the police are still investigating how they even got the alcohol, so they might not get charged for anything. in mankato in the past year there had been to other young deaths due to alcohol. & the consolers at mankato high school are helping students get through his death.

outside reading 16

I read an article on fox9.com
cops issued 127 tickets late friday to people at a loud party. they were all drinking and most of them were underaged. eight of those people were under arrest, 3 of them were arrested for giving false information to the police, 4 of them were arrested for unlawful assembly, and 1 was arrested for underaged drinking. i dont think thats fair that only one person was arrested for underaged drinking when they are were underaged. they obviously could not arrest all of the people who were underaged, but only arresting one of them just isnt fair. in my opinion.

DO NOT EAT KING NUT PEANUT BUTTER! that was the cuase of both deaths. the first death was an elderly women, who had other health problems. and the second was an elderly man who had other health problems also, so they are not 100% sure that the sellamnella was the reason he died for sure, it may have been a mixture of things. also in virginia there were 2 deaths, and the outbreak sickened around 400 people. there are other foods with peanut butter in them, like some peanut butter crackers, that they are taking out of stores just as a proecausion, they are not sure if they have the selmanella in them also, but just to be on the safe side, they are not going to be selling them any more.

OMG!
this morning january 13th 2009 more than 200 car accidents happened!! and that doesnt include the cars that slid off the road and into ditches!! in only a three hour period! "we had 25 accidents in 15 minutes" Tom heininger "we cant keep up with it all" one part of the freeway was even closed for 15 minutes because of one of the crashes, which isnt that good, especially when there are other people who need to get to work!!
i think that we should have had a snow day and no one should have had to go to work today cause of the road conditions. :]

i read an article on startribune.com about a women who drownded her baby in the bath tub in 2005 and is now being sentanced to jail for 25 years. she said that she has gone through enough pain already. she also says it wasnt her plan to kill her child. also the baby was never even found after the "accident" one of the reporters thinks that this is the first murdering that happened in minnesota that the body wasnt found.
I think that this is sad, and unless she really didnt try to kill her baby then i dont think she should have to go to prison.. and even though they cant find the body it still doesnt matter, they should just do a lie detecter test to see if it was purposly done or not, also if she knows where the body is.

Reading Minute.. Outside reading 10

i read an artcile online about a girl who was tricked into thinking she was talking to a teenage boy online, who ended up not. One day she was not heard from for about 4 hours, and her brother reported her to be missing, becasue her dad didnt know about it yet, and he was at work. At her house they found a chair propped up against her door, her glasses broken, and that she had left the house with out any shoes. they found her body along with the kidnapper's body in a storage garage. it seemed to be that they both suffered from gunshot wounds, and that Kacie (the missing girl) had been secually assaulted. when the police officers arrived at the storage garage, they heard a gunshot, beleiving that it was the kidnapper (David Fuller) comitting suicide.

this article was recently posted, but it was about a story from 1975..
A nine year old girl was missing from her neighborhood, and about a month after her dissaperance she was found dead in a neighbors garage. she was sexually assulted and strangled. Just recently in June, 2008 the police announced who the killer was. [Jerome Barrett] a convicted rapist. and he was arrested. for years they had always suspected it to be a 15 year old boy from the neighbor hood.. but they were wrong. He is now in jail for that murder and many other attempted murders that he was found guilty of..
